BSA Virtual Events: Free & open to all

BSA is offering free webinars through February of 2021, open to all who wish to attend. Most webinars are recorded for later viewing on our YouTube channel. Upcoming and past webinars are all listed below.

All of the events listed below will be live captioned in English by a professional from ACS Captions, with accompanying machine-generated translations of live-generated captions into Spanish, German, French, and more.

Upcoming Webinars: Fall/Winter 2020-21

Following up on our successful spring and summer program of virtual events, the Society is delighted to announce a robust calendar of virtual activities for fall and winter 2020. Join us to learn from our community of booksellers, librarians, and scholars about a wide range of topics from medieval and Renaissance manuscripts to screenplays to artist books.

We are especially excited to present a series of three sessions featuring the Book/Print Artists/Scholars of Color Collective, all marked with an asterisk in the list below. Book artist Tia Blassingame founded the Collective to build community and collaborations with BIPOC book/print practitioners and scholars. The collective represents a growing community of more than twenty book artists, scholars, librarians, papermakers, letterpress printers, printmakers, and curators. All are passionate about book history, print culture, and the endless potential of artists’ books as vehicles of social change and cultural conveyors that uplift our communities, and tell our stories, histories. Please join us for a stimulating series of conversations by book artists and scholars that will pay special attention to the role of the book arts and textual materiality as important aspects of thinking critically about race in the present moment. The BSA is grateful to David Solo for generously sponsoring this series with a gift – thank you, David!

All of these sessions will be recorded for later viewing on our YouTube channel. All of BSA virtual events are free and open to the public, though registration is required. Click through in the links below for full descriptions and presenter bios.

Contact us to lead a webinar

We welcome proposals for webinars led by members of the BSA community. Please send a description of the event you would like to lead to Program Committee Chair Sonja Drimmer, at programs@bibsocamer.org. In your email, please be sure to describe your experience in research, collecting, or teaching in the subject area covered by your proposed webinar.

The BSA has a modest budget to compensate webinar leaders with $200 per person, per session. As we do have a limited budget for this initiative, we encourage those who are securely employed to volunteer their time, if that feels right, to help us to reserve funds for those facing COVID related financial challenges. We pay everyone unless they specifically state that they wish to volunteer.

NB: Call for Proposals to the Program Committee – Virtual Only for Oct. 23 deadline

The call for proposals for programs scheduled for January – April 2021 is now open, with the usual October 23 submission deadline.

As the safety of in-person events remains uncertain, we can only accept proposals for virtual events. In addition to funding (e.g., honoraria to speakers), the Society can provide some administrative support and virtual webinar hosting via Zoom. Please contact Program Committee Chair Sonja Drimmer with any questions.

Recorded Webinars Available on YouTube

Per the below, we are working to add accurate English subtitles for all of the video recordings on our channel, as well as subtitles translated into other languages.

Improving Webinar Accessibility with Community Subtitling

As of September 28, 2020, YouTube has discontinued its Community Captioning program. We are very sad to see this as volunteers have captioned and translated several YouTube videos on our channel using this tool. The information below is now out of date; check here for more information about how BSA will be captioning and translating webinars going forward. (2 October 2020)

The BSA records many in-person and virtual events to offer free, virtual programming to our membership and a broader public. These videos are accessible through the BSA’s YouTube channel.

The BSA is committed to improving access to these recordings. As of Spring 2020, we are working to provide edited English and other language subtitles, with a particular focus on Spanish to reach audiences throughout the Americas. Each video’s description indicates the availability of (or need for) specific language subtitling.

We need English speakers to edit automated transcriptions, and speakers of other languages to translate them in YouTube. We are pleased to offer free one year memberships to all who submit complete translations of edited English transcripts of individual videos. In other words, one completed transcript or translation = one year’s free membership. If you are already a member in 2020, we will auto-renew your membership through December 2021. Only one free membership per individual; however, if you complete a second translation we will be happy to offer a free membership to another person as a gift from you.

We created a guide to editing English subtitles and to adding foreign language translations that you can view on our website, here
La guía también está disponible en español, aquí.
