About the Event
Arabic Letterpress: Past, Present, & Possibility, held as part of Beirut Art Center’s Fall for Print fair, explores Arabic letterpress printing, bringing together talks by Aya Krisht and Samer Bou Saleh in partnership with Waraq. The talks will shed light on the history of Arabic letterpress as a crucial yet overlooked cornerstone of Arabic typographic development, as well as its revival towards bridging historical understanding with contemporary practice.
Maamoul Press co-founder Aya Krisht will present on the history and current landscape of Arabic letterpress based on her research and practice in letterpress printing; while Hadeel Studio founder Samer Bou Saleh will present on his efforts to collect and preserve letterpress type, equipment, and practice in Lebanon, reviving this craft amid its local disappearance.
The talks will be accompanied by a display of printing artifacts and materials. Letterpress printing demos will be held the following day at Beit Waraq as part of Waraq’s Open House in conjunction with Fall for Print (10 am - 3 pm Local Time).
