Exploring Book Arts in Theory and Practice: Artist Talk and Workshop with Erin K. Schmidt

Join the Center for Public Humanities at Oakland University (Rochester, MI) for an artist talk and bookmaking workshop led by award-winning book artist Erin K. Schmidt. Schmidt, a 2023 Kresge Artist Fellow, creates quiet, evocative spaces within her handbound and sculptural book art. Schmidt will discuss the role of structure in book design, noting how the architectural principle of “form follows function” applies to nonverbal storytelling and book design. How, she will ask, can a book’s structure aid in its narrative?

Erin K. Schmidt earned her BFA from Michigan State University in 1999. In 2010 she earned her MA in book arts from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts, London. She was awarded the Sheffield International Artist’s Book Prize and her work was published on the cover of The New Bookbinder: Journal of Designer Bookbinders. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in private and public collections, including Tate Britain.
