Readers, Makers, and Medieval Consumer Culture, The 19th International Conference of the Early Book Society
Location: New York University
Readers, Makers, and Medieval Consumer Culture: MSS and Books from 1350–1550
What were medieval bestsellers? What constituted the book market in the Middle Ages? This conference addresses these questions from many angles: by considering manuscripts and books as luxury items, the importation of manuscripts and/or books from the Continent, Continental influence on English books, women’s (or men’s) reading circles, multiple copies of manuscripts and books (often an indication of popularity), owners and patrons, or the development and growth of private, monastic, or university libraries. The conference will also consider representations of manuscripts or books as status symbols in miniatures or paintings.
The conference will include more than 20 sessions featuring dozens of speakers. View the full program here.
